2017 Summer Sunshine Grants

UWFC is excited to announce its 2017 Summer Sunshine Grants and thanks all of its generous donors in Fayette County for making these grants possible.

Congratulations to this summer’s recipients:

Recipient No. 1: House of Ruth

Amount: $4,000
Purpose of Award: To provide services for formerly incarcerated women who have suffered in the past from drug dependency and either have no residence or have been court- ordered to reside in a supervised environment. Such services include daily needs, utilities, family counseling, addiction counseling, and costs for transportation to work and doctor appointment.

Recipient No. 2: The Salvation Army

Amount: $4,000
Purpose of Award: To offset operational expenses and provide emergency assistance for Fayette County residents in need, such as assistance with food, utility bills, lodging and rent, medical necessities, and needed transportation.

Recipient No. 3: Hope Center

Amount: $2,500
Purpose of Award: To purchase medical supplies needed for family and pre-natal services, including STD/STI testing, pregnancy tests and prenatal vitamins, HIV and Hepatitis C testing and treatment, and ultrasounds.

Recipient No. 4: Fayette County Sheriff’s Department

Amount: $2,500
Purpose of Award: To assist in the purchase of a narcotics-detecting K-9 and training for its handler. The K-9 and his human partner will work to remove narcotics from the community and provide outreach and education at local schools.

Recipient No. 5: Community Sharing Foundation

Amount: $2,500
Purpose of Award: To provide food for Fayette County families in need and assist with expenses. Each month, CSF gives approximately three (3) days of food to registered households and distributes food to an average of 1,200 people.

Recipient No. 6: Grace United Methodist Church Food Pantry

Amount: $2,500
Purpose of Award: To provide food for Fayette County families in need. The Grace UMC Food Pantry provides food each week on Monday morning and Wednesday evening.

Recipient No. 7: Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church Food Pantry

Amount: $2,500
Purpose of Award: To support Mt. Zion’s burgeoning food pantry that has offered a food giveaway twice a month since September 2016 and its Thanksgiving Food Basket Program that has been providing Thanksgiving meals to neighbors in need since 2007.

Recipient No. 8: Magic Moments

Amount: $900
Purpose of Award: To assist families in need with tuition costs arising from their children’s attendance at a quality preschool program.

Recipient No. 9: Eastview Elementary School

Amount: $500
Purpose of Award: To fund a gardening program in which students, faculty and parents will participate. Students will learn about food sustainability and the work that goes into growing food, developing an appreciation of farming along the way.
